The Ashevillage Institute (AVI)
AVI creates sustainable living solutions through education, demonstration and action.  AVI offers hands-on workshops and other learning opportunities at our eco-urban center in a downtown neighborhood of Asheville, North Carolina.

AVI promotes urban sustainability through:

Timeline
2007: Complete house retrofit including clay plasters & paints; get Certificate of Occupancy; shed relocation; establish greenhouse & tent area; exterior grading; complete garottage (adobe out building); design outdoor classroom; kudzu management; site design begins
2008
: Establish gardens, compost & humanure; host educational programs; install  courtyard; organize citywide event - Ashevillage Building Convergence
2009: Design & implement headquarter's master permaculture plan; host PDC & other workshops; strategic planning & development



Parent organization
AVI thanks it's parent nonprofit, Kleiwerks International, an organization that empowers communities to be more sustainable by teaching hands-on natural building and whole-systems solutions.  Since 1998, Kleiwerks has built dozens of community centers using natural and renewable materials.  We have trained thousands of people from over 30 countries and have led hundreds of educational programs.
