Over 50 “mud enthusiasts” from as far as Canada, Holland, and Colombia convened for three weeks of projects, presentations, and tours. NBX offered 20 workshops and classes in the art and science of natural building. 10 projects provided the ‘hands-on classroom’ at Ashevillage— an eco-urban demonstration affiliate site of Kleiwerks International. Participants learned hands-on skills, from wall systems to heating systems, timber framing to bamboo. Citywide and global strategies for generating regional movements that support community- and place-based living were explored.
Projects included building a load-bearing earth block structure, timber-framed tool shed, bamboo archway, earthen plasters and paints over conventionally built walls, highly efficient wood-fired oven, fireplace and griddle, adobe brick making, six wall techniques, and more. Previous projects on site included a remodeled conventionally-constructed home that demonstrates building methods which combine ecologically-friendly living with self-sufficiency in a “normal” urban setting.
